Nyakim Gatwech, a South Sudanese descent model, got attention for her dark skin color and earned the recognition “Queen of Dark.”
“Why on earth would I ever bleach this beautiful melanin God bless with me,” responded when model Nyakim Gatwech was questioned if she would bleach her skin if offered $10,000.
Gatwech, originally from South Sudan, is an Instagram sensation and model based in the United States. Breaking the stereotypes of beauty norms, she uses her social handles (973K followers on Instagram as of June 2023) to promote self-acceptance and self-love, no matter the color of the skin. With the recognition as “Queen of Dark,” her fans are curious to know Nyakim Gatwech’s family and her origin.
Nyakim Gatwech Family
To be very clear, Nyakim Gatewech was not born in the United States. The model had a long story of coming to the United States from her homeland, South Sudan, moving by her bare feet.
Her parents are from Maiwut, South Sudan, but they fled to Gambela, Ethiopia, following the Second Sudanese civil war. It was there, Nyakim was born on 27th January 1993. Though born in Ethiopia and has never visited South Sudan, Gatwech considers herself South Sudanese.
From Ethiopia, the Gatwech family migrated to Kenya, living in the refugee camps until they finally entered the United States when she was 14. Along the way, she lost her two siblings.
Initially, the Gatwech family settled in Buffalo, New York. Nyakim is raised by a single mother alongside her sister.

Nyakim Gatwech Modelling Career
When Nyakim immigrated to the United States in 2007, she faced racism. The model said she never thought being dark was a problem until she came to America. While in middle school, everyone stared at her and made fun of her skin tone.
But it was her sister who influenced her to pursue a career in modeling, who herself was also a model. Depressed by racism, Nyakim, at one point, thought of bleaching her skin She would just go home and cry to her sister.
As a senior year student at St. Cloud Tech High School, Nyakim got the opportunity to model in a fashion show called Africa Night at St. Cloud State University. Her first modeling project was amazing though she was a bit nervous at first sight.
After graduation, she traveled to New York City and tried to sign with a modeling agency, but that process took forever. After that, she relocated to Minneapolis and attended the Minneapolis Community & Technical College, majoring in nursing and doing modeling on the side.
She came to the limelight Teen Vogue caught her with her IG post about an Uber driver asking about her skin color.
And Nyakim Gatwech earned the nickname “Queen of Dark.”

Nyakim Gatwech, 30, kept her love life out of the public eye. There is less to no idea if the Ethiopian-born American model is dating or single.
In October 2019, a Twitter page named In October 2019, a Skin (@BEAUTIESHADES) dropped a picture of Nyakim Gatwech holding a baby with an anonymous man. It is still unknown if the man in the picture is her husband or if it is just a modeling project.
