In the fight between love and religion, love always marks a victory. Habiba Abdul Jabbar, the ex-wife of NBA superstar Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, changed her religion to Islam for the sake of love. She was born Janice Brown and was a Christian.

Kareem Abdul-Jabba And Habiba Abdul-Jabbar Married In 1971
Habiba, a senior at California State University, met her future husband, Kareem, a senior at UCLA, during one of the Los Angeles Lakers games. At the very time, she was dating Kareem’s friend, Cliff Anderson.
However, they did not date promptly after their first meeting.
In a book, “Giant Step,” by Kareem Abdul-Jabba, he disclosed some information about their relationship. He remembers he invited Habiba to see UCLA play, and she happily agreed.
Further, he said, “I started calling her, and we began going out.” But Habiba did not enjoy much of Karrem’s circle. She liked Kareem but not his friends. So they eventually stopped hanging around.
They did not see each other until the summer of 1969 but got immediately close again. She visited him during winter in Milwaukee Bucks.
After Kareem asked her if she would consider looking into religion, she agreed. She studied in Washington with Hamaas Abdul Khaalis and his wife. After that, she moved to D.C., got a job, and became part of the Islam community.
Their wedding was held in a mosque in Washington D.C., on 28th May 1971. Unfortunately, Habiba’s parents, who traveled from New York to Washington D.C. to attend the marriage, were not allowed into the mosque because they were Christians.
Being in an Interfaith relationship is quite easy, but it eventually leads to a cultural issue when it comes to marriage.
