Married Life & Musical Journey

Married Life & Musical Journey

Growing up, Gilberto was part of a gang of youngsters involved with music, where she eventually met her future husband, Joao Gilberto, a singer and composer who actually invented the bossa nova. They were married and had a son, João Marcelo, who later joined her mother’s band.

Initially, Astrud sang at home with her husband. Later, they did a couple of college concerts with Joao with him as a special guest.

In 1963, her husband, Joao, asked her to join him on a trip to New York to help him as a studio translator to record his album, collaborating with Stan Getz, a jazz saxophonist. Fortunately, her fate took her to sing the song “Girl From Ipanema” rather than just working as a studio translator, which became a massive international hit.
